1996 169 cm Grey
Breeder – Klaus Meyn
Colman is by Carthago (Capitol / Calando I) who prior to his sports career stood at stud at Haselau from 1990 to 1995. In 1996 he was leased to Zangersheide at the same time Jos Lansink commenced working there – the rapport was instant and the pair finished 11th in the Olympic Games at Atlanta that year – four years later the pair again appeared at the Sydney Games.
On the dam side, Colman carries plenty of ‘blood’. His dam Rosenquarz is by Lord, 75% Thoroughbred and she is out of a mare by another important Thoroughbred, Marlon.
Marlon, another Thoroughbred that was influential in Holstein
Bred in Ireland in 1958, Marlon was a successful racehorse as a two and three year old before he arrived in Holstein to be stationed at the Kremper Marsh. According to The Holsteiner Horse:
“Marlon xx correspnoded with the type, frame and conformation of the modern refining stallion, and in this connection he produced very true-to-type offspring, whereby he sired his best progeny when paired with Holsteiner mares of the ‘old’ type. His long legs were one of his typical characteristics, which always made him look slightly downhill. This impression was further reinforced by the fact that he lacked depth in girth, which is no rarity among the Thoroughbreds. Marlon’s movements were excellent. He always showed light-footed and elastic paces, All in all he was a stallion of great charm.”
Indeed because his offspring were so elegant and beautiful they tended to become dressage stars rather than jumpers – including Montevideo who won team gold with Uwe Saur at the 1984 Olympics.
Although he was bred by Klaus Meyn,Colman is one of the star stallions at the private stud of Lothar and Sven Völz.
Colman passed his performance test at Marbach in 1999, where he topped the jumping standings with a score of 134.13, but 113.49 in the dressage, meant he finished in fourth place.
In 2012, Lothar Völz was awarded the Golden Holsteiner Verband Badge of Honour, recognizing Mr Völz as an “institution” in Holsteiner horse breeding.
Colman with Lothar and Sven Völz
In 1976, he stationed the first Verband stallions at his farm, including Locarno, Mahmud, and Montanus. Since 1984, Wöhrden has been a private stallion station, and is now managed by his son, Sven Völz. Many very frequently used stallions have been stationed there.
Since 1985, Lothar Völz has successfully presented 40 stallions at the stallion licensing in Neumünster or Elmshorn. The most important include Barnaul/TB, Cascavelle and Colman (1991), the 2000 reserve champion stallion Barinello by Barnaul/TB, the 2003 champion stallion Carinjo by Cascavelle, and, just recently, in 2012 Crumble by Colman.
As Holsteiner president, Jan Lüneburg said in his tribute: “Not just in Holsteiner circles, Lothar Völz is highly regarded for his readiness to help others and his hospitality. Like no other, he knows to fascinate the breeders and inspire them for the Holsteiner horse.”
Robert Whitaker and Catwalk IV
Colman is the most popular of Carthago’s sons and produced four horses on the preliminary list of entrants at the Rio Games. He has 24 licensed sons. He has a Holsteiner breeding value of 145 (96%) for jumping, and 98 (96%) for dressage.
According to Dr Nissen of the Holsteiner Verband:
– he should be crossed with typful mares with a touch of “blood” (“blutgeprägt” in german!)
– the mares should not be to small at height of withers
– he puts a good character und lots of motivation on his progeny, also carefulness and power (to jump high)
– Colman might be the best son of Carthago being active in breeding in Holstein.
Colman is 47th on the 2015 WBFSH jumping sires rankings, with 17 competitors, by 2020, he has dropped to 65th in the rankings.
Catwalk and Robert Whitaker
He is the sire of four jumpers at 1.65 level, and 46 jumping 1.60. His most successful offspring has been the stallion, Catwalk IV with Robert Whitaker, with winnings of €1,298,703 – his most recent success was a win in the Five star World Cup in Helsinki in 2019. His other millionaire is LB Convall (Cascavelle / Sacremento Song xx) who has won €1,232,708 with Phillip Weishaupt – including two five star wins at the big ones – Aachen and Calgary.
The 2021 Hanoverian Stallion book, records 713 competitors, 151 ‘S’ level jumpers, with €2,944,062 in winnings – nineteen horses with over €15,000 in winnings. His FN breeding value for young jumping horse contestants is 134, while his value for highest level achieved is 135. His Hanoverian value for jumping is 131, for dressage, 77. He scores 101 for type.
Another star by Colman, Philipp Weishaupt riding LB Convall takes out the CP ‘International’, presented by Rolex at the CSIO Spruce Meadows ‘Masters.
