Caracas, from the Australian bush to CHI Al Shaqab

Back in 2010 Jamie Kermond was a farrier and part time showjump rider and trainer. THM visited him at home and he was working his new young hopeful, Caracas. Jamie also had the ride on his dam, Colthago who was imported from Germany and brought to Australia  for clients, she had been selected by Helen Chugg who advised the new owners to import the mare, who is by Colman, in foal to Casall,  and Caracas was the result.

The young stallion, Caracas, how long have you been working with him?

“We’ve had him about 12 months now but because I have been going away with the other horses, he has missed out on a lot of work. He’s still really green, he rides like a real baby. He’s a five-year-old, but I think he will be seven before he starts to look like a really impressive horse. He’s got a lot of potential and ability there but it is just going to be a time thing for him. At the moment, I am taking it really quiet. I just want to get him out and show him around, show him different courses and different fences, and get him confident over the next 12 months, then we will get a little more serious with him.”

In 2013, the pair were Australian Showjumping Champions

Caracas travelled to Europe with Jamie and competed with him before he was sold.

And he has just won the first class at CHI Al Shaqab 19 with Jos Verlooy… Pic Stefano Grasso Al Shaqab

Jos Verlooy of Belgium jumped to first place in the CSI5* 1.45m showjumping class. Verlooy and his stallion, Caracas, completed the two phases with no faults, finishing in 33.77 seconds to win first place and prize money of 6,250 Euro.

Verlooy said: “It was great to win. My horse jumped super. He decided to go faster the first day – that was my plan, so that was good. Al Shaqab has an unbelievable stadium, the facilities are super for the riders and horses. It’s my fourth time here and I really like to come here (to participate). I’m looking forward to the Grand Prix on Saturday.”
