Born in Melbourne in 1943 and educated at Geelong Grammar, Peter’s life right from the start was entwined with the sport he loved, showjumping.
Peter and Brahmin
In 1964, Peter and Brahmin, were named reserves in the Olympic Showjumping Squad for Tokyo. Peter was the Australian showjumping chef d’equipe from 1987 to 1993, and after that worked as a manager / trainer for Paul Schockemöhle from 1993 to 1999. In 1999, Peter moved to Kuala Lumpur, establishing Asiapromote – dedicated to promoting showjumping in that part of the world. The success of the 2003 and 2004 Grand Prix of Kuala Lumpur lead to the city receiving the ultimate accolade – a World Cup Final for 2006.
Marcus Ehning and Sandro Boy were victorious
And what a World Cup Final it was! All the best in the world lined up for a real World Cup Final. British event organizer, Nicholas Brooks-Ward paid tribute to Peter’s organizing skills: “Your skill in dealing with so many complex issues and your coolness under pressure was a sight to see and something event organizers would envy.”
That year, 1999, was a big year for Peter, he married television news anchor, Wan Zaleha, who was very much a partner in the grand adventure that lead to the World Cup final.
Peter battled bravely against cancer the last couple of years, he will be truly sorely missed since the catalogue of his many achievements does not capture the grace, the style and the charm of the man.
In his own words: “The equestrian sport is my lifeblood. It flows with passion through my veins and gives me inspiration to excel.”
From Vicki Roycroft comes this tribute: “Peter Winton was one of life’s great visionaries, with probably his greatest achievement bringing to fruition the KL 5* Grand Prix show in Malaysia for many years, including running a World Cup Final there. Born in Melbourne and was a very competitive show jumper and eventer for many years, and in later life was one of our best show jumping Chef d’Equips. But first and foremost a very dear friend whom I will miss greatly.”
