VTV/R+V Foal Championship – Winners by Diarado and Clicksem
(GER/Bad Segeberg – press release) It had been hotly anticipated by many breeders and others: the 2020 state foal championship in Bad Segeberg with the best Holsteiner youngsters born in 2020 competing against each other. A filly and a colt foal, respectively, have been recognized and awarded the champion title in the frame of the state horse show of the Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg associations.

35 foals were presented to be judged by the jury, this year comprising of Philipp Baumgart (Verden), Helmar Bescht (Schlieckau) and Deike Ahsbahs (Bokel) bestand. On the basis of the current adjustments to the state ordinance, 500 visitors were permitted to visit the state show ground and the championship contenders saw a lot of interest. In the filly division, a Diarado-Casall daughter bred by Manfred Nissen (Breklum) reigned supreme. She had already been recognized as the winner at the foal championship of her home breeding district, North Frisia. She put up an impressive performance at the foot of the carrier dam breeder Manfred Nissen had had her transferred to from her genetic dam, Indira VI, who had already attracted attention as the Holsteiner champion of the 2019 elite mare show at Elmshorn. Due to the fact that his home-bred grey mare by Casall-Caretino was to be produced as a sport horse for a start, Nissen had opted for embryo transfer. “This foal couldn’t be any better in terms of type and movement”, Helmar Bescht from the judges trio said about the filly. “She very powerful, with an energetic thrust from behind and an awesome ambassador of her sire Diarado.” A Corfu de la Vie-Rigoletto daughter (Martin Prignitz, Kollmoor) with highly successful eventing relatives was named reserve champion filly. Third place went to a filly with dressage blood by Vitalis-Aljano bred by Malte Kuhnert, Freienwill.
A close call in the colt division
The colts saw a son of Clicksem out of a Cachas dam ranked on top by the jury. Peter Rehder of Krumstedt is the happy breeder, who received a Böckmann horse trailer sponsored by the R+V insurance group and Hauke Ahsbahs, same as Manfred Nissen. According to judge Philipp Baumgart, the stallion prospect “has put up a dynamic and charismatic performance with a particularly notable and ground-covering canter.” Runner up was Conthargos-Baldini II son (Günther Fielmann, Schierensee) from a highly successful mare family, as the colt’s dam is a full sister to Bella Donna, Meredith Micheals Beerbaum’s former international success horse. On third position was a colt by Unlimited-Corrado I bred by Joachim Jürgens, Gremersdorf.

As Philipp Baumgart summed it up: “Today, one foal has been better than the other. All of them have been evaluated with top marks and the Holsteiner breeding programme has undergone a very positive development over these past years in terms of type, movement, and legs.“ Norbert Boley, managing director of the Holsteiner Verband stallion keeping GmbH and initiator of the foal championship was more than pleased with the contestants, as well: “We have seen a brilliant age group with gorgeous types, in particular in the colts’ class it has been a close call, reflecting the great density of quality in the top group. “
