Julia was born in Hong Kong of Australian parents, and started riding at the Jockey Club when she was seven years old. After living in the United States, the family moved to Australia when Julia was eleven.
Julia was a successful Junior and Young Rider and competed for Australia on Vedor at the London Olympic Games.
