1993 170 cm Bay
Breeder: Rudolf Meyer, Germany
Sandro Boy’s dam Wiadora was a full sister of the stallion and advanced showjumper, Grannius who was exported to the United States, and the private Oldenburg stallion Grasco as well as half sister to the advanced showjumper Night Fire (by Night and Day).
Wiadora foaled two intermediate class showjumpers Le Grannus (by Le Vainqueur) and Langran (by Lancer II). Her daughter Waldamsel is in turn, the dam of the state premium candidate and Bundeschampionate placegetter, White Light (by Cordalmé Z).
Her pedigree unites two of the stalwarts of Oldenburg breeding, the Klatte family’s frontliners, Grannus and Argentinus.
Sandro Boy completed his stallion performance test in Münster-Handorf in 1996, 13th out of 60 candidates, but with the best jumping score – 144.98, with a 10 for free jumping.
The ride on Sandro Boy was taken over by Marcus Ehning in 2003, and Sandro Boy was soon competing at the highest level. The pair won the 2003 Frankfurt Grand Prix and then in 2004, the Düsseldorf, Gera and London Grand Prix, were runners up in the Dortmund Grand Prix and vice-champions of the German Championship in Balve. In 2005, Sandro Boy won the Grand Prix at Düsseldorf, Olympia and Gera. In 2006, they won the Zurich Grand Prix before taking out the World Cup Final in Kuala Lumpur – going through the event without ever looking like touching a rail. By mid-2006, he had won €300,000 in prizemoney.
According to Marcus Ehning (as quoted in Breeding News, August 2006) “When I took him over he over-jumped the obstacles with too much effort and was therefore wrongly estimated as unconventional. Then I took him slowly up to higher demands. He has enormous jumping potential, and is very sensitive and careful. I had to find out how to ride him in competition because of his sensitivity.”
Alas, after the win in Malaysia, Sandro Boy’s confidence seemed to desert him, and at the World Cup final of 2008, he suffered the indignity of being eliminated in the first round of the competition, however he came back in 2010 to win Munich Grand Prix and place second in Bordeaux and third in Lyon.
Sandro Boy has nine licensed sons, including n Saccor, who was 10th in a Stallion Class at Neustadt-Dosse with Heiko Brehmer in 2001. Sandro Boy Junior won young show jumper classes and placed as well in 1.50 m classes, Sandro Man de L was an international competitor with Johannes Ehning.
His standout star is the mare Sabrina (out of a Landadel mare) who with Marcus Ehning in 2012 won at Olympia, Munich and Bordeaux, then in 2013, won at s’Hertogenbosch and was 2nd at Frankfurt. But there are others: Fantomas de Muze (For Pleasure) is something of a six bar specialist with Karline de Brabander, with wins in Mechelin and Beervalda and Ramouncho de Gree was 2nd in a 1.50 class at Franconville ****.
Sandro Boy does not appear on the list of the top 100 WBFSH Jumping Stallions for 2013.
